Couples therapy (or marriage counseling) is a process through which a couple (either married, engaged, or dating) engages in therapy together with a trained mental health professional. Your TMHA clinician will help you and your partner to identify specific areas of conflict in your relationship and areas that you'd like to improve. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to develop a treatment plan to help you all work through challenges and strengthen your relationship. Although the primary target of therapy is the couple, the therapist will also explore how each individual's life history and experiences has shaped their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how they might be impacting the relationship in seen/unseen ways. The goal of therapy is not just to address the most pressing problems, but to also encourage a deeper understanding of one another to prevent future problems and enhance the long-term health of your relationship.
Reasons people seek couples therapy may include-
- Betrayal/secrets
- Lack of communication, negative communication
- Withholding affection
